Pakistan’s first natural-sounding Urdu text-to-speech

Rehnuma Awaz gives your screen reader a natural Urdu voice.

Add Rehnuma Awaz to NVDA, TalkBack or VoiceOver, and you hear your messages and documents in clear, natural Urdu, with the English words inside them read correctly too. Our team developed it in Pakistan, and it is free on Windows, Android, iPhone and Mac.

Rehnuma Awaz at a glance

How it works

Your screen reader picks the words. Rehnuma Awaz gives them a voice.

  1. Your screen reader

NVDA, TalkBack or VoiceOver follows the screen and decides what to read.

  2. Rehnuma Awaz

Speaks those words in natural Urdu and English, with correct pronunciation, numbers and pauses.

  3. You

Hear your messages, bills and lessons yourself, at the speed you choose.

The voices

Hear it for yourself

Zainab, Akbar and Shahid speak Urdu, and Akbar speaks English too, so a mixed sentence stays in one voice. Press play on any of them.

  • Rehnuma Zainab (Female)

A mature female voice, composed and warm, that gives Urdu its full dignity.

  • Rehnuma Akbar (Male)

A deep male voice with a slight rasp. He speaks plainly and keeps every word clear.

  • Rehnuma Shahid (Male)

A calm, soft-spoken male voice that stays easy on the ears through a long book.

  • Rehnuma Akbar English (Male)

Akbar’s own voice in English, so a sentence that mixes Urdu and English sounds like one speaker.

Why it matters

More than two million Pakistanis read by ear. Until now, their devices could not read Urdu well.

More than two million people in Pakistan are blind or visually impaired. Most use their phones and computers through a screen reader, the software that speaks whatever is on the screen. A screen reader needs a voice, and the Urdu voices on offer sounded robotic, mispronounced everyday words and stumbled over numbers and English. Many people switched their devices to English instead. Others waited for a relative or friend to read their Urdu messages, bills and lessons to them.

Rehnuma Awaz gives screen readers the Urdu voice they were missing. It is a neural text-to-speech engine that works inside NVDA, TalkBack, VoiceOver and other apps. Centangle Interactive built it in Pakistan, with funding from Ignite National Technology Fund and the support of the Ministry of IT & Telecom.

Features

Tuned for Urdu, down to the comma

Our team tuned the pronunciation, the numbers and even the pause after a comma for Urdu, so long reading sessions stay easy on the ear.

  • Urdu and English in one sentence

Rehnuma Awaz moves between Urdu and English mid-sentence, the way Pakistanis talk, without an awkward pause or a jarring change of voice.

  • Voices that sound human

Neural male and female voices, developed in Pakistan for Urdu. Warm, clear and comfortable to listen to for hours, even at the high speeds experienced listeners prefer.

  • On your phone and your computer

The same Urdu voice on Windows, Android, iPhone, iPad and Mac, so the voice you hear at your desk is the one in your pocket.

  • Works inside your screen reader

Rehnuma Awaz plugs into NVDA, TalkBack and VoiceOver. You keep the screen reader, shortcuts and gestures you know, and gain a natural Urdu voice.
